WHAT IS HONOR?

WHAT IS HONOR?

There are a couple of times during the year when the word HONOR means a great deal to me and my family. One is Memorial Day and the other is Veteran's Day. We HONOR those who have either gone before us or we HONOR those who have served to protect us and the freedoms we enjoy. So it goes without saying that we were pleased to take the helm as the adult advisors to the group of young boys and girls at Lakeridge Elementary who go by the title HONOR GUARD
Did you know that ours is the only elementary school to bear that title? It was a spark of an idea that caught fire and the group, the brainchild of a young teacher, Michelle Oveson Reed around 2006, was born. The program experienced great success as the youth learned about military codes: codes of HONOR, codes of hard work.
The group has the distinction of performing flag ceremonies for major events. They've performed at pro hockey games, pro baseball games, parades and the yearly Veteran's Day program sponsored by the Lakeridge Elementary PTA. They open every school assembly and they do it with HONOR!
So when I think of that five letter word, HONOR, I think of those wonderful young people who come week after week to rehearse flag ceremonies. They are not coerced, they are not paid...they come because they like it!
A little bit about the Zollinger's who currently serve with the Lakeridge Elementary School HONOR GUARD
MSG Mike Zollinger is a Veteran of two foreign wars and served as a Combat Medic Instructor the last 15 years of his military career before retiring in 2010. All eight of his children attended LR Elementary as well as many of his grandchildren. Some of them have been in the HONOR GUARD with two currently serving.
Victoria Zollinger, better known in the school as Mrs. Z, has been involved at LR Elementary since moving to Magna in 1982. She has served in various positions with the PTA and currently serves as the PTA Legislative Representative. She also has the distinction of following her husband as he traveled the country for his military assignments.
